Old Zion Baptist Church was established in 1866 by freed slaves who left First Baptist Church in Marietta where they had been slave members. Their first place of worship was an area set aside under trees, a brush arbor. Later, they built a wooden structure near the arbor, but that building was destroyed by fire. In 1888, this brick church was constructed. It is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
